The Steam Engine Room of the Finlayson Factory in Tampere was a working space for men who knew their value as high esteemed professionals. Women were present only as names given to the two big cylinders: Marie and Helene. Living women were kept outside piling wood for the big steam kettles.

WATER IS BOILING was a performance- and video installation, in which I brought into the Steam Engine Room duties still nowadays often considered as women’s jobs: laundry washing, cleaning, cooking…
My doing was accompanied and commented by a singer, who recited sentences from old notebooks of the steam engine workers;  advice from the 1930s how to properly wash the laundry and so on.

During the 1 hour performance the audience could move around and see on three large screens what was goimg on in the room . One of the three video cameras was constantly following the performers.

VESI KIEHUU! oli osa Tampereen Ammattikorkeakoulun Taiteen ja Viestinnän osaston Finlaysonin alueella 2006 järjestämää AVO- kaupunkitapahtumaa

Finlaysonin tehtaan höyrykonehuone oli arvonsa tuntevien ammattimiesten työtila, missä naiset olivat läsnä vain tämän Suomen suurimman höyrykoneen sylinteriparin niminä: Marie ja Helene.
Todelliset naiset saivat tyytyä pinoamaan pihalla polttopuita pannuhuoneen höyrykattiloita varten.
VESI KIEHUU oli noin tunnin mittainen performanssi-installaatio, jonka kuluessa valtasin konehuoneen ‘naisten töille’: mm. pyykkäsin, pyyhin pölyjä, kiillotin kaiteita ja keitinvettä ja kahvia omilla höyrypannuillani.
Tekemistäni kommentoi ja säesti resitoimalla laulaja Sinikka Törmälä, joka käytti tekstinään mm.
“Sulzer-koneen Tieron antoja joita kuita tärkeenpiä muistiin panoja täällä tapahtumista”. Hän antoi myös ohejita lattian ja pyykin pesuun. Ne löytyivät Kämppäemännän käsikirjasta.
Tunnin mittaisen esityksen aikana yleisö saattoi kävellä ympäri museotilaa. Kolmelta suurelta valkokankaalta eri puolilla tilaa saattoi seurata tapahtumaa ja yksi kolmesta videokamerasta seurasi koko ajan esiintyjiä.
